Located in the pedestrian zone, where the Cehovska and Sv. Florijana streets meet, stands the neo-renaissance building of the County court erected in 1896 by the architects Deutsch and Höningsberg. In the oval middle section of the building, there is a niche with the statue of St. Florian, a patron saint against fires. Paintings and statues of this patron saint can be found in more locations around town, such as the one on the facade of the Fire brigade’s house because in its history Požega experienced many tragic fires. The most horrific was the one in 1779 after which the city was rebuilt in today’s typical baroque style. More recently the most severe fire was the one in 1842 when almost the whole city centre burned in only two hours.
