Grammar school (Gimnazija)

On St. Theresa Square stands the building of Catholic Grammar School and Catholic Primary School (until 2010 it was the building of Požega Grammar School). Grammar school in Požega boasts a century-long tradition as one of the oldest educational institutions in Croatia. It was founded by the Jesuits in 1699. Throughout the period from 1761 to 1776 it acted under the name „Academia Posegana” and included two colleges, philosophy and theology. Thanks to Oton Kučera’s efforts, the building acquired an astronomical observatory which was used for teaching purposes, and at noon a „cannon” was regularly sounded. The second floor was built in 1939 when the building took on its present appearance.
