Franciscan Monastery and the Church of the Holy ghost

The oldest historical record of the Franciscans in Požega dates back to 1260, whereas the church is believed to have been built during the reign of King Ladislaus IV around the year 1285. During the Turkish reign the church was converted into a mosque and its appearance has been redesigned throughout centuries with multiple extensions, in particular after the fire in 19th century. Its original shape can be seen in the sanctuary with its arched gothic ceiling. In 1995 archaeological excavations unveiled a richly decorated romanesque portal in the northern part of the church, which is assumed to have been an older church dating from the 13th century. The monastery was built in 18th century and preserves a library including 15th century incunabula.
