{"id":3946,"date":"2021-09-16T09:34:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-16T07:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pozega-tz.hr\/en\/?p=3946"},"modified":"2024-11-13T12:55:27","modified_gmt":"2024-11-13T11:55:27","slug":"crkva-svetog-lovre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pozega-tz.hr\/en\/crkva-svetog-lovre\/","title":{"rendered":"The Medieval St. Lawrence Church"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Immediately next to the former Jesuit College, today the seat of the Po\u017eega Diocese, stands the medieval St. Lawrence Church, one of the oldest preserved monuments of Gothic heritage in this part of Croatia and the bearer of great historical and cultural significance. It survived the Ottoman rule most probably because it was turned into a mosque and later into a warehouse. The interior is decorated with gothic frescoes dating back to the period from the 13<sup>th<\/sup> to the 15<sup>th<\/sup> century, which despite numerous devastations are still mostly preserved, restored or conserved.\u00a0 In the year 1998 Pope John Paul II appointed St. Lawrence as the patron saint of the Po\u017eega Diocese and ever since the patron saint\u2019s ancient temple in Po\u017eega has been the second most important church in the Diocese.
