Many citizens from Po\u017eega left a memorable mark on Croatia\u2019s history and with their achievements they made a great contribution to our country\u2019s science, literature, art and other segments of life.<\/p>\n
Some of the most famous Croatian writers were born, schooled and worked right here in Po\u017eega. The Jesuit monk Antun Kani\u017eli\u0107 was the author of the 18th-century baroque collection of poems named \u201cSaint Rosalia\u201d. He was also one of the first to write about scientific topics and was very attentive towards keeping the Croatian language safe from non-Slavic influences. As he wished, he was buried in the church of St. Lawrence in Po\u017eega.<\/p>\n
Vjekoslav Babuki\u0107, one of the most important linguists and leaders of the Croatian national movement of the 19th century was also born in Po\u017eega. He was the author of \u201cIlirska slovnica\u201d the first Croatian grammar written based on linguistic literature. Since 1838 he was the first secretary of the Illirian (Croatian) library and then became the secretary of the Matica Ilirska (Matrix Croatica). In 1846 he was named the first professor at the Department for Croatian language at the Royal Academy in Zagreb. Vjekoslav Babuki\u0107 was also one of the most prominent proponents of national rights in the period of the Croatian national movement. For those achievements, many streets in Croatia are named after him.<\/p>\n

\u00a0Miroslav Kraljevi\u0107, a descendent of the famous noble family in Po\u017eega was the author of \u201cPo\u017ee\u0161ki \u0111ak\u201d (The Po\u017eega Student) the first novel in modern Croatian literature. He also founded the first printing house in Po\u017eega, second in Croatia in 1862.<\/p>\n
The historian, writer of travelogues and educator Julije Kempf founded the City museum and in his memoirs \u201cMoja po\u017ee\u0161ka sje\u0107anja\u201d (\u201cMy memories of Po\u017eega\u201d) he wrote about important events in Po\u017eega during the end of the 19th and in early 20th century. His capital work was the monograph \u201cPo\u017eega\u201d from 1910.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0One of the most important poets in Croatian literature in-between two World Wars, Dobri\u0161a Cesari\u0107, was born in Po\u017eega just like Matko Pei\u0107, a distinguished art-historian, painter and writer, author of one of the largest collection of travelogues in Croatian literature.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Josip Eugen Tomi\u0107, Janko Jurkovi\u0107, Vilim Korajac, Napoleon \u0160pun Stri\u017ei\u0107, Kajo Ad\u017ei\u0107, Armin Pavi\u0107, Franjo Ciraki, Zdenka Markovi\u0107, Josip Pavi\u010di\u0107, Ivan Mesner, are just some of the famous representatives of Croatian literature born in Po\u017eega, the Athens of Slavonia as the city was nicknamed for its many important writers and scientists.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Po\u017eega was the birthplace of Dragutin Lerman, the great explorer of Africa and writer of famous travelogues. Lerman was a member of the African expeditions in Congo by Henry Morton Stanley in the second part of the 19th century. Lerman was included in the negotiations with the chiefs of the local tribes in the area around the river Congo. As the general secretary of the Belgian government for the Eastern Congo (Democratic Republic of Congo), he established the Belgian colonial administration. During his explorations, he discovered the waterfalls on the river Kwil in 1893 and named them Zrinski Chutes (Zrinski waterfalls) after the famous and celebrated Croatian noble family. He donated his African collections to the Croatian national museum, today the Ethnographic museum in Zagreb.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u00a0Among the painters from Po\u017eega the most prominent were Gustav Po\u0161a and Jozo Janda. Miroslav Kraljevi\u0107 is considered to be one of the most important painters of the 20th century. He set the foundations of the Croatian modern with his most famous works being \u201cSelf-portrait with a dog\u201d, \u201cThe girl with a doll\u201d and \u201cThe Po\u017eega valley\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u00a0The world of theatre was also enriched by many actors born in Po\u017eega, such as Ervina Dragman, Mia Oremovi\u0107 and Vilma No\u017eini\u0107 the famous opera singer. A prominent place in the history of Croatian sports goes to the famous athlete Boris Han\u017eekovi\u0107. Other people from Po\u017eega also deserve to be mentioned as they all left a big mark in various fields of work, such as the doctor of medicine Andrija \u0160tampar, Ivan Reiner and Matija Ko\u017ei\u0107, then the mathematician \u017deljko Markovi\u0107, botanist Karlo Bo\u0161njak, historian and archivist Josip Buturac, architect Pavao Ju\u0161i\u0107, member of the Croatian academy Filip Potrebica and many others.<\/p>\n
\u00a0Still today many people from Po\u017eega stand out in their field of work in Croatia and abroad, such as writers Lana Derka\u010d and Branko Hribar, the painter, director and set designer Zlatko Bourek and historian Tvrtko Jakovina. In the world of music there are Boris \u0106iro Ga\u0161parac, Ivana Kindl and Vesna Pisarovi\u0107. Actresses Nada Ga\u010de\u0161i\u0107-Livakovi\u0107 and Ines Bojani\u0107 have successful careers in theatre and in the world of professional sports the handball player Marko Kopljar stands out.<\/p>\n
